Orchard Primary School

Orchard 6eI started to work with Orchard Primary School in Hackney in the Autumn of 2013. We enlarged existing planters around the playground so that they now have a large growing space. Each class has its own planter which will be used for many gardening projects.

Orchard 7eWe have also built four planters on a balcony to create a small balcony garden that can be used within lessons and as a new outdoor space for teachers and parents use.

Orchard 8eThe nursery garden has always suffered as there is a local fox, who liked to regularly come and dig it up. So far (famous last words) the new expandable fence, which can be untied easily so the pupils can access the garden, has kept the fox away. We are growing beans and sunflowers in this bed as these are nice large seeds for the little ones to plant and they are rewarding plants to grow and to link to stories.

Orchard2 ePupils painted the planter signs which will help the pupils to take ownership of their garden.

orchard 4Year 3 pupils from Orchard and Southwold joined forces and took their produce to sell at Waitrose, Canary Wharf as part of their food growing enterprise project.

Orchard 4ePupils designed labels for their produce. They realised that there homegrown, organic produce was pretty special.

Orchard 9ePupils from the after school gardening club exhibited their scarecrow at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show. Private Orchard looked great, and pupils really enjoyed looking around the show on press day.

Orchard 5eParents ran a garden stall at the summer fete, to sell homegrown plants to raise money for the school.
